Every smart lock I've tried has the same problem: "auto-unlock" that doesn't feel automatic. You walk to your door, stand there for five seconds while Bluetooth figures out you're outside, and then it unlocks. It's faster than fumbling for keys, but it never felt like the future. The Aqara U400 is the first smart lock that actually gets hands-free entry right, and UWB is the reason why.

What Makes the U400 Different

Ultra Wideband is the key technology here. Unlike Bluetooth, which knows you're "nearby" but can't tell which side of a wall you're on, UWB can determine your precise position — including whether you're approaching the door from outside or walking past it from inside your hallway. This eliminates the biggest annoyance with Bluetooth auto-unlock: the lock triggering when you're just walking around your own house.

In our testing, the U400 consistently unlocked as I walked up our front steps — before I reached the door handle. No phone interaction, no watch tap, no waiting. I walked up, the deadbolt retracted, and I walked in. It worked this way roughly 95% of the time over three weeks of testing. The few misses happened when my iPhone was in a back pocket with the screen pressed against my body, which seems to dampen the UWB signal slightly.

Installation

This is a full deadbolt replacement, not a retrofit. If you've installed a deadbolt before, this is straightforward — about 20-30 minutes with a screwdriver. If you haven't, budget an hour and watch Aqara's installation video first. You're removing your existing deadbolt assembly entirely and replacing both the interior and exterior hardware.

The upside of a full replacement is a cleaner look and tighter fit than bolt-on adapters. The downside is that renters or anyone who doesn't want to modify their door should look elsewhere — something like the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock fits over your existing deadbolt thumb turn instead.

The Battery Approach

Instead of four AA batteries crammed into the lock body, the U400 uses a single rechargeable 4,880mAh battery pack that physically slides out. When it's low, you pull it out, charge it with any USB-C cable, and slide it back in. It takes about two hours to fully charge and lasts roughly six months.

Six months is fine, but it's less than the 12-18 months you get from AA-powered locks. The tradeoff is sustainability and convenience — no buying batteries, no waste. Just set a calendar reminder to charge it twice a year. If you forget, there's a physical key backup and a USB-C emergency power port on the exterior.

Smart Home Integration

Matter over Thread means this lock works with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, and Home Assistant without needing an Aqara hub. That's rare for a smart lock. Most competitors require their own bridge or are locked to one ecosystem. The U400 is genuinely platform-agnostic, which matters if your household uses a mix of Apple and Android devices.

In Apple Home, the lock shows up with full controls including auto-lock timers and Home Key configuration. In Google Home, you get lock/unlock and status. Alexa works for voice control. We primarily use Apple Home, and the integration has been seamless — it shows up in our existing automations without any extra configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Aqara U400 work with Android phones?

Yes, but with limitations. Android phones can use the fingerprint reader, access codes, NFC tap-to-unlock, and app control. However, the signature UWB hands-free unlock feature requires an iPhone 11 or newer, or Apple Watch Series 6 or newer. Android users won't get the walk-up-and-it-unlocks experience.

Can I still use a physical key?

Yes. The U400 includes a physical key cylinder as a backup. Two keys are included in the box. This is important for situations where the battery dies and you don't have USB-C emergency power handy.

How secure is the fingerprint reader?

Aqara rates it at 98.6% recognition accuracy, which matches our experience. It reads in under a second and rarely requires a second attempt. It stores up to 50 fingerprints, so the whole household plus frequent visitors can have access. The fingerprint data is stored locally on the lock, not in the cloud.

Will this work with my existing door?

It fits standard US doors with a 2-1/8 inch bore hole and either a round or square edge prep. Most residential doors made in the last 30 years will work. If your current deadbolt is a standard single-cylinder, you're almost certainly fine. Check Aqara's compatibility guide if you're unsure about your door's measurements.

Bottom Line: The Aqara U400 is the most impressive smart lock I've tested. UWB hands-free entry works as advertised, Matter support means it plays nice with every ecosystem, and the rechargeable battery is a welcome change from disposable AAs.
